“Right Things” for Writing Expectations

Are your writing expectations appropriate? Examine a one-page, K-12 developmental rubric that meets Common Core State Standards, pre-college testing and AP expectations. Rated K-12 student samples and materials coordinate, forming a system to guide K-12 writing instruction. Participants keep rubric! (Information differs from, but coordinates with the 8:00 and 12:45 sessions.)

This session is grounded in Spiral Dynamics theory, that sees human development proceeding through eight general stages of thinking and acting, all of which every person potentially has available to them. Using this model, we will help teachers identify critical issues and sources of support that will promote responsible action.
Teaching to the Heart: How to Inspire Students to Care About Character (PRO PARA)

Based on the Character Education Partnership's three-part concept (heart, head, hand), this workshop shares the "Care Elements" to revitalize schools' efforts to focus on the heart. Grounded in Youth Frontiers' retreat methodology from nearly 25 years of working with schools, the YF "Care Elements" inspire students to care about creating a culture of respect so that schools can focus on their primary academic mission. Participants will leave with specific tools to implement in their every day classroom that challenge students to live a life of character.
Learning Objectives: 1) To know and understand YF's three "Care Elements" to use in daily interactions with students. 2) To be re-energized in the deeper purpose of educating young people: to develop their character.
3) To connect with and learn from other educators who are focused on teaching to the heart.
iPad and Web2.0 Assessment Tools

Participants will explore a variety of apps, Web 2.0 tools and other innovative technological advancements to help provide alternative assessments for reluctant and struggling students. Participants will also learn how to read exams onto an iPad and how to create and use Google Forms as an assessment tool.
